What is e-blood?

  • e-blood is computer software that controls the operation of the transfusion laboratory and the release of Blood & other Products to patients.

  • e-blood provides high level control of lab procedures eliminating the reliance on manual SOPs.

  • e-blood allows non-laboratory staff the ability to safely access Blood & Blood products independently of the laboratory.

  • e-blood manages the identification, security and validity for patients, samples, results, blood and products

  • e-blood is a secure server-based multi-user system

  • e-blood can be standalone or networked across laboratories, hospitals & regions

  • e-blood can be interfaced to the LIS & automated laboratory instruments

  • e-blood uses Microsoft Windows Industry Standard platform & dedicated MSSQL Database

Why was e-blood developed?

  • Blood Bank systems included in traditional multi department LIS systems were inadequate and were mainly concerned with inventory control. The advent of computer crossmatching and more particularly remote release placed much more emphasis on safety therefore a purpose-designed system was required.
  • This view is shared by the US FDA which to date has only approved a small number of sites in the US to use computer crossmatching.
  • It has been recommended that safety critical software such as e-blood should not be produced from an existing system and recommended it be designed from scratch.

Key e-blood benefits

  • Blood and /or products can be released for transfusion at any designated blood release site irrespective of laboratory facilities & irrespective of where testing was performed.
  • e-blood is a mature reliable system in operation since December 1999. The precursor to e-blood, EBRS was in operation from 1994.

Specific e-blood benefits:

 Laboratory - Labour savings:

  • The ability to remove the need for remote-site crossmatching facilities.
  • Remote Release reduces on-call requirements
  • The reduced number of transactions on units (crossmatching, transporting, untagging, fridge sorting) reduces workload significantly.
  • Crossmatches are reduced by extending the Group and Screen protocol to almost all surgical procedures and clinical conditions
  • Reduced crossmatching reduces the consumables cost.
  • Remote Release leads to a reduction in courier costs
  • Fridge space for blood storage is reduced.
  • e-blood reduces exposure to potentially infectious samples and donor bag blood.

Safety

  • Improved Safety & Security
  • Software controlled environment
  • Protected isolated database
  • Full Audit trails
  • Electronic matching of Patients & Blood or Blood Products according to validated algorithms using:
    • Positive Patient identification
    • Serological History
    • Transfusion requirements

Patient Care

  • Enhanced Patient Care
  • Rapid access to blood (especially at remote sites) in urgent situations
  • Software controlled release of units ensures safer transfusion practice
  • Improved stock control ensures timely and sufficient delivery of blood to those patients in need.
  • Controlled emergency issue

Blood Usage

  • Efficient Blood Usage
  • Improved inventory control ensures blood stocks are more effectively utilised. The expiry rate of blood has been reduced at HAPS down to < 2%
  • The C/T ratio has been reduced to less than 1.2:1 across the HAPS network. At some remote sites within HAPS, the C/T ratio has been reduced from levels of above 10:1 to below 2:1
  • Efficiency by providing remote release of blood and blood products at sites without laboratory facilities, with minimal blood inventories but with maximum blood utilisation.
